The Witches Orb

This Orb (de Heksen Bol) is placed in the 1992 on the estate of Kernhem, Ede. The story goes that a Wit Wief is living on the estate, and as these spirits probably derive from herbal medicine women and witches, they placed the Orb on a very specific place: the herb garden. The people of Eden did this to ‘protect’ their herbs from being taken bij the spirit; as she would see herself in the orb’s reflection she’ll get scared away or turned into dust.

The Orb is called ‘het Witte Wief’, read the text below to see how it is described:

van Gemeente Archief Ede: “De plaatsing van de 50 kilogram zware (massief metaal) heksenbol 'Het Witte Wief', op het kleine centrale pleintje van de kruidentuin door wethouder R. Spiegelenberg (rechts) en voormalig wethouder J.J. Modder (links).” (1992)

NL: ”Welkom in de kruidentuin, een levende herinnering aan de tuinen die ooit het kasteel en later het landhuis van Kernhem omringden. Wandel door de tuin en ontdek de geurige rijkdom van geneeskrachtige kruiden, keukenkruiden, verfplanten en bloemen. Plukken mag niet, maar ruiken zeker wel.” In het hart van de tuin staat een bijzondere heksenbol: Het witte wief. Deze bol van 50 kilo massief metaal zou volgens oude overleveringen heksen en andere duistere wezens doen verschrompelen zodra ze in de bol kijken. Zo worden de kruiden beschermd tegen dieven van het andere soort. De ‘witte wieven’, mythische figuren die volgens lokale legenden ronddolen op het landgoed Kernhem, worden zo op afstand gehouden. ENG: Welcome to the herb garden, a living memory of the gardens that once surrounded the castle and later the manor house of Kernhem. Take a stroll and discover the fragrant variety of medicinal herbs, kitchen plants, dye plants and flowers. Picking is not allowed, but smelling is encouraged. At the center of the garden stands a curious object: the witch’s orb “The White Lady”. This 50-kilo sphere of solid metal was once believed to make witches and similar dark beings shrivel at the mere sight of their reflection. In this way, the herbs are protected from supernatural thieves. The ‘white ladies’, mythical figures said to roam the Kernhem estate, are thus kept at bay. Do you dare look into the orb?
