As a child, my grandparents, Jaiu and Jaia, taught me that there is more in the world than what we can see, and that beings might hide behind every stone, tree, and shadow. Together, we searched for their existence through traces they had left behind. When my grandfather passed away, my grandmother grew quieter and more withdrawn, out of heartbreak for losing the love of her life. With both of them fading, so did the stories they told me. And so did my belief. Yet, as I got older, the urge to search again grew stronger.
Now as an adult, I set out to look for the invisible. Determined to find the evidence and the hidden stories that I could no longer see. This journey led me to the tales of the Witte Wieven: mist-like beings from Dutch folklore, fairies or spirits, believed to wander through ancient forests, swamps, burial mounds, and megalithic sites. For four years, I visited every place they might inhabit, always carrying my camera, driven by my grandfather’s words: ‘’Who searches, shall find’’. I searched for them the way I was taught: behind every tree, every rock, and beyond.
This project was funded with the help of CBK Rotterdam, het Cultuurfonds, Mondriaan and through the generous donations of my network through Voordekunst crowdfunding.
